Boxd raises $2M to scale cloud infrastructure for AI coding agents

Dutch startup Boxd has raised $2 million in a pre-seed funding round to build cloud computing infrastructure for developers and AI coding agents. The round was led by BlueYard Capital, with participation from OVNI Capital, Antler, S20 and Script Capital, as well as business angels from General Intuition and other technology companies.

Founded by Michiel Voortman, Laurentiu Ciobanu and Hidde Kehrer, Boxd is developing infrastructure that provides virtual machines for developers and AI agents to run code, test software and manage development workflows. The company is addressing the growing computing needs of AI coding agents, which can work in parallel and require dedicated, long-running environments.

Traditional development setups often rely on individual virtual machines or containers. Boxd says these systems can become difficult to manage when developers run multiple AI agents at the same time. Giving coding agents access to development environments without human supervision can also create security concerns.

Boxd’s platform allows teams to create as many cloud machines as they need and includes snapshotting and live-forking capabilities. These features allow developers and AI agents to create copies of running machines, including their memory and active connections, in less than 100 milliseconds. This enables multiple agents to test different solutions in parallel while reducing the need to set up and maintain separate development environments.

The company uses a simplified virtualisation architecture focused on CPU, RAM, storage and networking rather than emulating additional hardware such as audio devices, webcams and USB ports. Boxd says this approach reduces the software attack surface and helps address security risks linked to autonomous AI agents.

The company will use the pre-seed funding to grow its team and further develop its custom virtualisation engine as it scales its infrastructure for developers and AI agents.
