London-Based Reactive Technologies Secures €19M EIB Financing to Strengthen Europe’s Power Grids
Reactive Technologies is a London-based power-grid technology company, has secured €19 million in financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to expand its platform, which is designed to reduce the risk of power outages, cut grid operating costs, and support the integration of more clean energy across Europe.
The company says its GridVerix platform provides real-time data on key indicators of grid stability, including inertia—the stored kinetic energy in generators that helps the power system respond to sudden disturbances. It also measures the strength and stability of voltage across different parts of the electricity grid, helping operators better understand and manage grid conditions.
“EIB support comes at a critical moment. The rapid growth of renewable energy and large power consumers such as data centres are making Europe’s grids more complex to manage. By providing real-time measurements of grid stability, GridVerix can help operators keep the system secure, operate more efficiently and reduce costs for consumers,” said Reactive Technologies CEO Marc Borrett.
Founded in 2010 by Dr. Heikki Huomo and Borrett, Reactive Technologies is a UK-based Grid-Enhancing Technologies (GETs) company focused on supporting the energy transition, growing electrification, and rising demand for electricity.
As more wind and solar power is added to Europe’s electricity grids, Reactive Technologies says its GridVerix platform can help grid operators identify potential vulnerabilities and maintain system stability. The technology is also designed to support the integration of more renewable energy and the connection of large electricity users, including data centres. By improving grid management, it can also help reduce renewable energy curtailment, where power generation is intentionally reduced, along with the related costs for consumers.
The EIB’s support comes in the form of venture debt and is backed by the InvestEU programme. The financing also supports TechEU, an EIB Group initiative aimed at increasing investment in strategic technologies and strengthening Europe’s technological competitiveness.
“Europe needs electricity grids that can keep pace with the rapid growth of renewable energy. Reactive Technologies gives grid operators a much clearer picture of what is happening across their networks in real time. Our financing will help bring this European technology to more markets, reduce the risk of power outages and support the secure integration of more clean power,” said EIB Vice-President Karl Nehammer.
Of the €19 million EIB loan, Reactive Technologies plans to invest up to €7 million in research and development at its centre in Oulu, Finland. The remaining €12 million will be used to support the rollout of its technology across the European Union.
The company is headquartered in London, while its sales and project delivery teams serve customers around the world. Reactive Technologies also has commercial offices on both the East and West Coasts of the US, as well as in the UAE and Australia. Its research and development centre is located in Oulu, Finland.
